Resources for Landlords and Real Estate Investors

Book Review: The Book on Managing Rental Properties

“No matter how good you are at finding real estate deals, you could lose everything if you don’t manage your properties efficiently.” This quotation embodies the purpose of The Book on Managing Rental Properties: A Proven System for Finding, Screening, and Managing Tenants with Fewer Headaches and Maximum Profits. BiggerPockets podcasters Brandon and Heather Turner, who have owned and managed rental properties for years, co-wrote this guide to help others learn from their experiences.

In the Turners’ book, landlords will find tips for developing successful management strategies for any property investment. Covering topics such as fair housing laws, marketing, tenant screening, lease terms, inherited tenants, bookkeeping, and working with contractors, the authors offer valuable insights for handling every step of the landlord-tenant relationship. Each chapter intersperses personal, humorous anecdotes from the Turners’ investing experiences with topical headings that simplify finding information. An appendix of sample forms and contracts also provides a helpful starting point for new investors.

The book is highly rated, with nearly 2,000 Amazon reviews and an average 4.7 star rating.  It’s a helpful reference for any landlord and has an encouraging tone and straightforward step-by-step strategies.  New investors will likely feel more confident after reading it, while experienced investors may find new ways to maximize profits or streamline daily tasks.

Managing Rental Properties came out in 2015 as part of the BiggerPockets Rental Kit. Given its age, the book doesn’t cover items like keyless entry or security systems which are common today.  However, most agreed with one reviewer who stated, “This book has quite literally everything you need to be a successful landlord.”
